Webmama's Favorite Books:
Picture Books G-H

George Shrinks
by William Joyce

As a child I was always been fascinated with stories where the main character is miniature...And apparently I'm no different as an adult...This one is obviously about a little boy who shrinks! I really like the pictures in this book also!

The Girl Who Loved Caterpillars
by Jean Merrill

This book is a fantastic tale of a girl who's love of caterpillars was unshaken by surrounding criticism. I think she's a great role model for sticking to your guns about your passions! (And also in breaking stereotypes about females!)

Go Dog Go!
by Philip D. Eastman

"Do you like my hat?" "NO! I do NOT like your hat!" This book is still quotable in my adult life! <grin> I think this may have been my favorite Dr. Seuss book as a child...and it's not actually written by Seuss! (I just found that out!) There's constant action in this book...all kinds of doggy adventures...but my favorite still is the party in the big tree! I used to pour over that picture for what seems like HOURS as a child....it just fascinated me! Now my daughter is just as mesmerized by it.

Going Around the Sun: Some Planetary Fun
by Marianne Berkes

I got this book to review from Dawn Publications. This is sort of a planetary version of "Over in the Meadow", if you're familiar with that one. Very cute! Great way to look at the planets of the universe from the perspective of Mother Sun and the planets as her children. Good intro into the order of the universe, at least the major parts of it. Its fun to read aloud, with the rhyming and the pictures are great! They show the order of the planets, adding on as each page adds another planet. And this book is up to date because Pluto is discussed as NOT being a planet. I love that there are activity ideas and web links at the end of the book to build upon what you learn from the book!

Good Zap, Little Grog
by Sarah Wilson

A really cute book about a little caveboy. Most of the book is made-up words, used in rhyme. Very cute for even very little ones! And the pictures are really cute too!

Grandad's Prayers of the Earth
by Douglas Wood

I just discovered this book recently...and I just have to say...WOW! The pictures are just FABULOUS! And the message....gives me shivers, chokes me up! Very powerful message about how all of nature "prays." Trees, streams, rocks, wind, grass, everything. "Each living thing gives its life to the beauty of all life, and that gift is its prayer."

Grandma's Feather Bed
by Christopher Canyon

(John Denver Series)

I got this book to review from Dawn Publications. This books is so FUN! I remember this song very fondly from my own childhood, and I'm excited to find a fun way to introduce it to my own children. The pictures are so fun and silly! Very giggle inspiring! If you don't know the song, you can hear a sample and even buy the complete song for 99cents here.

Grandpa's Face
by Eloise Greenfield

A little girl with a Grandpa who has a very expressive face! One day she gets upset by what she sees in his face...

The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest
by Lynne Cherry

This book has a great environmental message. It's all about the interdependence of the Brazilian Rain Forest...When a young man intends to chop down a kapok tree...the animals who depend on the tree come to him in his sleep & explain their plight. I like all the diversity that you see in the pictures...of all the multitude of species that exist in the Rain Forests.

Green Eggs and Ham
by Dr. Seuss

"That Sam-I-Am, that Sam-I-Am, I do not like that Sam-I-Am!" Another very quotable Dr. Seuss! (To this day I cannot know someone named Sam without calling them "Sam-I-Am" <chuckle> I used to say to one little Sam-I-Am that I knew: "That Sam-I-Am, that Sam-I-Am, I do so LIKE that Sam-I-Am!!" ) I think the message in this book is not to judge a food by it's color!

Harold and the Purple Crayon
by Crockett Johnson

I always wanted Harold's Purple Crayon! With it, he creates whatever he wants...using his imagination and his crayon, Harold is one fun kid! My daughter is as fascinated by this book as I was as a kid.
